Choosing a Hardwood Flooring Species

Hardwood flooring comes in various species, each with its unique characteristics and hardness levels. Hardness is typically measured on the Janka hardness scale, which rates the resistance of wood to wear and denting. The higher the Janka rating, the harder the wood. Here are some common hardwood species, listed from hardest to softest based on their Janka hardness rating for when you’re considering solid wood flooring in your home:

  1. Brazilian Walnut (Ipe): Janka rating of approximately 3,684 lbf. Brazilian Walnut is one of the hardest and most durable hardwoods used for flooring.
  2. Brazilian Cherry (Jatoba): Janka rating of around 2,820 lbf. Brazilian Cherry is known for its rich reddish-brown color and exceptional hardness.
  3. Hickory/Pecan: Janka rating of about 1,820 lbf. Hickory and Pecan are very similar in hardness and are known for their strength and resistance to wear.
  4. Maple: Janka rating of approximately 1,450 lbf. Maple is a popular choice for hardwood flooring due to its moderate hardness and attractive grain patterns.
  5. White Oak: Janka rating of around 1,360 lbf. White Oak is a durable and versatile wood commonly used for flooring.
  6. Red Oak: Janka rating of about 1,290 lbf. Red Oak is a popular hardwood flooring choice with a good balance of hardness and affordability.
  7. Ash: Janka rating of approximately 1,320 lbf. Ash is known for its light color and is relatively hard and durable.
  8. Birch: Janka rating of about 1,260 lbf. Birch has a moderate hardness and can have a variety of colors and grain patterns.
  9. Cherry: Janka rating of approximately 950 lbf. Cherry is a softer hardwood known for its warm, reddish-brown tones that darken over time.
  10. Walnut: Janka rating of around 1,010 lbf. Walnut is a softer hardwood with a luxurious appearance and rich, dark color.

It’s important to note that while Janka hardness is a useful indicator of a wood’s durability, it’s not the only factor to consider when choosing hardwood flooring. Other aspects, such as color, grain pattern, cost, and the specific application of the wood, should also be taken into account to find the best fit for your needs and preferences.
